St Andrews, ‘The Auld Grey Toon’, was the birthplace of golf. Its links was its nursery and the Old Course its academy. The clerics of the Church and the academics of its University honed and refined the game before The Royal and Ancient Golf Club gave it to the world.
But it was the honesty and integrity, innate in the character of St Andrews folk, which was imbued in golf and made it the ‘Great Game’. INTERIOR LIVING SPACE |
In 1895 Thomas Hamilton commissioned his ‘grand masterpiece’ to create Scotland’s most luxurious hotel. At that time, the ‘Old’ was the only course in town. The Grand Hotel’s scale prompted the R&A to build the New Course, which in turn led to the Links Act - ensuring unparalleled access to golf. Requisitioned by the Air Ministry in WWII, it then served as accommodation for the University of St Andrews for over 50 years. Sold to a private developer, it then fell into a state of disrepair … In 2009, Kohler Co. acquired the property, renaming it ‘Hamilton Grand’ and invested in a four-year restoration project. 26 homes of distinction have been created – 2, 3 and 4 bedroomed residences providing unique homes in the ‘home of golf’.
